Volkswagen ID.4 Charges Ahead at Napleton Volkswagen of OrlandoÂ
Volkswagen ID.4 Overview:
The newly introduced Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV is the first of the brand's long-range electric vehicles to be sold stateside. Newly designed to offer the best of Volkswagen traditionally-powered SUVs, the new ID.4 is designed to include bold design, enthusiastic driving dynamics, and the latest technology, both inside and out. This new Volkswagen is classified as a long-range Electric Vehicle (EV). With the added benefit of three years of complimentary (no-cost) rapid charging from Electrify America, its range goes even longer still.
Engineering, technology and value, the Volkswagen ID.4 is loaded with it. "The ID.4 is designed to win the hearts of those ready to go electric-and fall in love with Volkswagen again," said Scott Keogh, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. "It drives like a GTI, has the packaging of a Tiguan and the purpose of the Beetle. All the best things about VW in one package," he said.

Volkswagen ID.4 - Batteries are Included:
The Volkswagen ID.4 SUV utilizes the electric drive architecture key to the VW Group MEB platform's success. This time, the ID.4 returns to the brand's motivational roots because its electric motor-generator is located at the vehicle's rear, just like the engine in the original VW Beetle.
The Motor (motors, not engines power all electric vehicles!) receives energy from a battery pack of 288 cells in 12 packets. They are located in the underbody to create a lower center of gravity for optimal drive characteristics. This lower position also provides better weight distribution. The batteries are housed in an aluminum structure bolted to the vehicle's frame. We know that's a mouthful, but trust us, the system works.
At launch, early versions of the ID.4 vehicle will feature an 82 kWh battery with a rear-mounted AC permanent-magnet synchronous motor that makes 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates that the Volkswagen ID.4 rear-wheel-drive (RWD) 82 kWh models to have a range of 250 miles on a full charge.
New Volkswagen ID.4 EV owners can put their minds at ease regarding their new electric vehicles and any dreaded range anxiety, thanks to three years of complimentary fast charging by Electrify America. The ID.4 is chargeable using alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) fast charging capabilities.
The included onboard charger allows the ID.4 to top off the battery for around 33 miles of charge in an hour. A full charge occurs in seven-and-a-half hours at a public Level 2 or, conversely, a home charger. Finally, a DC fast-charger station with 125 kW charging can do the deed, bringing the vehicle from five to 80-percent in about 38 minutes.
Chassis Matters:
The new Volkswagen ID.4 rides on the award-winning MEB platform, utilizing a tried and true strut-type suspension system with coil springs, lower control arms, telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar in front. There's a multi-link axle with telescopic dampers, coil springs, and an anti-roll bar at the rear. It benefits from a tight turning radius of 33.5 feet, which compares favorably with other compact SUVs.
Braking on the VW ID.4 is equally innovative. Rather than utilizing disc brakes all-around, the VW ID.4 goes old school, but with good reason. Since EVs rely on regenerative braking, the company has found that a mix of disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear provides more regenerative braking power.
Good Looks and Technology, all in one place:
What is a Volkswagen without the VW logo front and center? We're not quite sure, but we are glad that the VW ID.4 proudly flaunts its heritage in this way. The new appearance provides a thoroughly modern representation of where the brand is heading. Large headlights suggest the vehicle's aerodynamics and styling cues, even into the future. Models available with the ID.4 Statement package add an illuminated VW logo and the light line radiating from it.
Along its flanks, clean sweeping lines work to give the ID.4 a decidedly futuristic look. A low, tucked greenhouse leads out to a rear-mounted spoiler, offering aerodynamics and a low drag coefficient at the same time. Dimensionally, the ID.4 tucks in just below Tiguan, with 180.9 inches of overall length. It's 64.4 inches high and 72.9 inches wide.

Inside matters:
The inside of the ID.4 continues the modernity theme and quite spacious besides. It features 99.9 cubic feet of total passenger volume, which is comparable to the slightly larger Tiguan. There are 30.3 cubic feet behind the second row in the cargo hold, and 64.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded forward.
Volkswagen ID.4 Safety Features:
No car or SUV is worth its weight if it comes up short in safety. If it did, you wouldn't buy it. The ID.4 takes care of that by utilizing both passive and active safety systems to protect both the vehicle and its occupants. Inside, there are six standard airbags; here, passengers are protected from almost every angle. Underneath, a replaceable aluminum panel protects the battery against road rash and other mishaps. Speaking of batteries, they include an automatic disconnect, should the vehicle be involved in a serious accident.
Volkswagen's standard IQ.Drive advanced driver assistance technology is also included as part of the ID.4's safety suite. This kit is comprised of Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian monitoring; Adaptive Cruise Control; Lane Keeping System; Travel Assist and Emergency Assist.
