The new Volkswagen Golf GTI for sale in Orlando FL was the originator of the Pocket Rocket genre. Now in its seventh generation, it is better than ever, featuring style, reliability and performance in one compact four-door, five-passenger hatchback. The new Volkswagen Golf FTI is loaded with practicality too: Fold down the rear seats and you practically have a hot-hatch station wagon!
One of its main rivals is the mid-sized Toyota 86. Originally part of Toyota's Scion sub-brand, it was absorbed into the Toyota brand because it was too good to let go. The 86 name refers to a legendary car from the company's past, the AE86.
Volkswagen Golf GTI vs Toyota 86 Exterior Review
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a four-door hatchback that thinks it's a sports car. Introduced 46 years ago in 1974, the VW Golf has continued, just like a fine wine to improve through time. For 2020, the Volkswagen Golf GTI features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission.
All VW Golf GTI models are front-wheel-drive and available in S and SE trim levels. If you need the traction and ability that all-wheel-drive offers, you will need to step up to the Volkswagen Golf R.
The Toyota 86 is the anti- Golf GTI. A swoopy two-door four-seater, it has fastback proportions and a rather tight back seat that is accessible only by sliding the front seats forward. The 86, which was developed jointly by Toyota and Subaru, is available in Base, GT and Hakone editions.

Volkswagen Golf GTI vs Toyota 86 Engine
The Volkswagen Golf GTI gets its power from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That power is sent from the engine to a six-speed manual transmission that lets you channel the road racer you aspire to be. For all others, there is a seven-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) automatic transmission that preloads the next gear because of its dual-clutch nature. It results in gear changes that are faster than what is humanly possible.
The Toyota 86 is powered by a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder designed by Subaru with fuel injection by Toyota. This package results in 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque with the six-speed manual transmission and 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque with the six-speed automatic.
All that power is delivered to the rear wheels for a little tail-wagging fun. Toyota is now offering a TRD Handling Package, which includes Brembo brakes and other performance features.
Volkswagen Golf GTI vs Toyota 86 Interior
The inside of the Volkswagen Golf GTI includes all that is good about European design. Toss in sculpted bucket front-row seats that do their best to keep you in place. Add performance instrumentation in the dashboard and the convenience of a second-row seating with side-door access for passengers to ride along.
Here's the bonus: The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a quick-change artist with its ability to fold the second-row seats flat, converting the 17.4 cubic feet of space behind it into nearly 54 cubic feet of total cargo space.
Audio systems in the Volkswagen Golf GTI range start with a base 6.5-inch touchscreen system that includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirrorlink integration. Additional technology includes an available 8-speaker Fender Premium Audio System.
The Toyota 86 includes a 7-inch touchscreen display system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The rear seat does fold forward, which increases the 86's cargo-hauling capabilities from 6.9 cubic feet to slightly more, which should be okay for a set of golf clubs (no pun intended).
Volkswagen Golf GTI vs Toyota 86 Safety Features
Volkswagen's Car-Net infotainment system is included on the Volkswagen Golf GTI at no charge for the first five years of ownership. Other safety assists include adaptive cruise control, self-steering parking, lane-keep assist, and parking sensors. The Toyota 86 includes Toyota's Star Safety System.
Neither the 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI nor the 2020 Toyota 86 have been tested by NHTSA at this time.
Volkswagen Golf GTI vs Toyota 86 Warranty
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is equipped with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty. The Toyota 86 includes a basic 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
